Currently, 1 in 5 children in the UK’s education system is identified as having special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This includes many neurodivergent children who require tailored support to thrive in school and daily life.
Despite this clear and growing need, government funding for SEND support remains severely stretched. In June 2025, the UK government delayed a much-anticipated overhaul of SEND funding by two years. This overhaul was intended to address the £5 billion debt that local councils in England have accumulated trying to provide necessary support.
With this delay, councils face continued financial pressure, forced to manage growing demand without sufficient resources. Many are already making difficult cuts to services that neurodivergent children depend on, including specialist staff, tailored educational programmes, and timely assessments. The delay has understandably caused outrage among those who are in need of support, who have already been waiting years for support and are now being asked to wait longer.
This gap in state support means families are often left navigating long wait times and inconsistent access to help. For neurodivergent children, delays in support can have lasting impacts on their development and wellbeing.
At Neurodapt, we believe innovation can help fill some of this gap. Our mission is to develop practical tools that support organisation and independence for neurodivergent kids, empowering them to manage daily challenges more effectively, especially during a time when public services are struggling to keep up. The government’s delay on SEND funding reform is a setback, but it only underlines the urgent need for innovative solutions that can make a real difference today.
